If you are in the market for new window treatments or coverings, you may find yourself in the same place I was, overwhelmed and ignorant. First, there are so many choices: different types, manufacturers, colors, fabrics and materials; I needed a lot of hand-holding. And, to top it off, I had no idea if the prices were competitive. I live in a busy and crowded city and don’t particularly enjoy driving all over town doing price comparisons.
By reputation, I assumed that if I went to the Home Depot I would be getting good, competitive prices. And, in the end, once I learned how to comparison shop more efficiently and effectively, I found that they were competitive. But, I also found that the service was hit-and-miss, sometimes even non-existent.
A friend of mine suggested that I try some of the shopping engines to do price comparisons. There are a bunch of these shopping comparison websites; I believe the top ones are Shopzilla, PriceGrabber and Shopping.com. You can just search for what you want and compare prices from one place to the next. It’s very easy and very efficient. What I found was that most of the lowest prices were online retailers of window treatments, a ton of them actually - who knew? The shopping engines really helped cut through the clutter. I found a bunch of retailers but was still left with a problem. I really needed good service; someone who could walk me through the different options and manufacturers. I am no interior decorator but I do know what I like when I see it.
I called one website and luckily got a sympathetic customer service person, turns out a lot of guys need hand-holding in this department. The woman I talked to asked me some basic questions and was able to really narrow down the right possible choices for me. She gave me way more personal attention then I received at the Home Depot and really won me over.
It turns out, at least in my case, that low prices aren’t the whole enchilada; service is really important when choosing something like window blinds. They are something you are going to have for a long time and will dramatically affect the looks of your home. There are even more considerations. Some window treatments offer good insulation (cellular shades), some shades (pleated shades) look like cellular shades, are cheaper but lack the insulation. If you want to cover big windows, like sliding doors, you need vertical blinds, panel tracks or even drapes. For areas of high heat and humidity, you need to consider faux wood or composite blinds. If you want mini blinds, vinyl is cheap but aluminum last a lot longer. The list goes on. I really learned a lot.
What I ended up receiving was a lot of service and good prices. Not to sound to pessimistic but I didn’t think that was possible anymore. In this day and age of giant, discount mega-store like Wal-Mart, and the Home Depot service the service-element of shopping has really suffered.
In the end, I purchased some very cool vertical blinds for my patio doors and cellular shades for my windows. I got my order quickly but then I was confronted with the daunting task of installing them myself. My order did come with installation instructions but, I still had questions. I thought I would put their customer service to the test and see if I would get the same service after the sale. I called the online retailer and asked for help. I spoke with a different customer service person that was just as helpful as the first. He walked me through the installation, I was pleasantly surprised.
I got a set of vertical blinds and cellular shades for a good price with good service, I am still amazed. So, if you’re looking for window coverings use the internet. – David Brooks

Enhance The Look Of Your Child's Room With Customized Blinds
One of the many joys and jobs you have as a parent is to help decorate your child's bedroom. Children enjoy being a part of the decorating process, which means you may end up with wonderfully imagined themes and interesting colors. Everything in your child's room can be incorporated into the decor you have chosen together, and the blinds on the windows are certainly no exception. By opting for customized blinds or altering existing blinds, you can ensure that your child has the room that he or she envisioned with you.
The first option is to, of course, order customized blinds for the bedroom. The options available are virtually endless. If there is something you want on your child's blinds: a color, a photo, or even a logo, you will be able to find a company that offers it. Just be prepared to pay for it, though. Keep in mind, though, that you do not want to have to buy new custom blinds every year, so help your youngster choose something that will be just as cool or popular over time as it is now.
If you don't want to wait for a custom blind order to go through at your local home improvement store, then consider finding custom blinds that are already made. Though that may venture away from the truest definition of custom, you can find almost anything you want online. What's more, by ordering online you are speeding the process up quite a bit. Do a search for the color, theme, size, or special effect you are looking for with your blinds.
Another option is to customize the blinds you already have or to buy off the shelf and customize. Assuming that the sizes available work with your child's windows, there is a lot you can do with blinds yourself. Painting is the biggest thing you can do. You and your child can come up with a pattern or color and paint the blinds together. The other option is to have your child actually draw a picture on the blinds that you can paint together. Seeing a drawing they created is something that can be exciting for your child initially and can go on to spark nostalgia as time passes. Just make sure you have blinds that are made of a material that takes paint well. It is advisable to test out the paint on an extra slat.
Decorating your child's room can be incredibly fun and satisfying. There is certainly no reason that every part of the room, including the blinds, can't be a part of the theme of the room decoration. With that in mind, consider customized blinds for your kid’s room. Order them at your favorite home improvement store, order them online, or customize them yourself. No matter what you choose, though, you and your child will have something you have done together and can be proud of.

Draperies are commonly used in any house because of its elegant look when put on the window. Draperies are very good curtains to used when one prefers to have a dim lit room. Most of the time, the color of the cloth used on a draperies is a determinant whether how dim your room maybe. How To Quickly And Easily Clean Your Mini Blinds Properly
I don’t know about you but nearly every place I ever rented before I bought my own home had mini blinds in it. Mini blinds are a great way to keep light out from the sun and also adjust how much light you allow into a room but they are big time dust collectors. If you don’t have a plan for cleaning them they can really drive you up the wall trying to get them clean and removing all the dust they seem to catch. No matter what the naysayer’s opinion is there is an easy way to do this.
First off you want to make sure that you have the blinds in the closed position, by that I mean the slats. In order to keep your blinds as clean and dust free as possible you should endeavor to clean them at least on a weekly basis with a duster made from lamb’s wool if possible due to the natural dust attracting action of lamb’s wool. This will not only keep your blinds clean but will also help prevent too much dust from building up.
If you are unable to procure a lamb’s wool duster then a natural hair paintbrush such as those made of horsehair will suffice. In this situation you will want to be sure to put some sheets or large towels under the blinds you are cleaning so that any dust that falls will fall upon those sheets or towels. Once in awhile, maybe every three or four months you should take them off and wash them in a bathtub.
If you have blinds in an area near the kitchen that may have accumulated grease on them you should use a good all purpose cleaner to cut the grease. First off you should spray the blinds down really good and allow the formula to sit for several minutes. Next, take a soft clean cloth and wipe away the solution. If you have a lot of grease you may find it helpful to soak the cloth in hot water first. Turn the blinds over and repeat the process on the other side.
Another simple trick that some people use is to simply don a pair of old think cotton gloves and use them to clean the blinds. To accomplish this you would prepare a solution of one quart of water with a teaspoon of ammonia which you then dip your gloved fingers into and run them over the blinds to clean them.
Lastly, you can always use a vacuum cleaner that has a brush attachment to clean the blinds without having to remove them. Afterwards you can use the trick of rubbing the blinds with a dryer sheet which removes the static that attracts dust to blinds in the first place.

Window Shutters and Blinds
Keeping your windows in style is important for keeping your house in style. That is why it is important to choose the right permanent window accessories with care so that you don’t have to replace them the minute styles change. Here are some good tips about how to make window shutters and blinds keep windows looking in style even when the styles change.
- Choose window shutters that can be painted. This will save you a lot money if the color of window shutters you want today is not so great in a few years. Instead of buying new shutters, you only have to buy paint to make the change.
- Stay neutral when selecting blinds. Keep blinds in your home a neutral color – white, cream, or off white are all good choices. This will prevent you from having to replace outdated colors. If you want to add color to your windows, do so with curtains and other window treatments.
- Choose blind and shutter styles that are plain. Styles of window blinds and shutters that are plain will never go out of style. Choose the designs that do not have trendy patterns, new colors, or intricate curves or cuts.
- Buy high quality shutters and blinds. The higher the quality, the longer you can count on shutters and blinds lasting.
Shutters and blinds may seem like minor accessories when it comes to the windows of your home, but they are among the most expensive. So it is important to choose them wisely so that they will last a long time and never go out of style.
Choosing the right window shutters, as well as window blinds, can make a huge difference in the appearance of your home. Find out more about window shutters and blinds at: http://www.window-shutters-and-blinds.com

Velux Blinds - Cover Your Loft Window or Skylight in Style with Velux Blinds
Skylights and loft windows are great for letting light in, but has there ever been a time that you don’t want that light to shine through? That’s where velux blinds come in.
Velux blinds are window blinds that are specially made to cover skylights and loft windows. Since these windows are at an angle rather than completely vertical, a special type of window covering is needed to cover the skylight or loft window properly. If you try to attach a regular window blind instead of velux blinds to a skylight, it will not cover the window at all, and it will actually hang as if the window is vertical. This looks very silly, and serves absolutely no purpose.
Velux blinds are made to fit on these windows properly to keep light out at certain times. So you may be wondering, how do you reach a velux blind to raise or lower it since it is on a skylight? Do you have to get a ladder every time you want to make an adjustment? This is certainly not the case. Most velux blinds are actually electronically operated by a switch or by remote control.
The one drawback to velux blinds is that they can be expensive. This is due to the special design of the blind, the electronic operation mechanism, and the few manufacturers that make this style of blind. But if you have a skylight or loft window that you would like to limit the light that comes in a certain times of day, the best way to do this is with velux blinds. You won’t be disappointed with the quality and capabilities of your velux blinds.

Go Green With Energy Efficient Window Blinds
Concern about our environment is certainly a growing concern. But, hitting home more directly, for many families, is the ever-rising costs of energy. If you live in a cold climate you are probably feeling the pinch of rising fuel oil costs. I lived in New Hampshire for many years and I was acutely aware of this. It seemed that every winter the prices just kept going up. But it is not just cold climates and seasons where rising energy costs are an issue. Cooling your home is more expensive too.
There are ways to dramatically improve the energy efficiency of your home and one of them is with the right types of window blinds and shades. One of the best types of window treatments for insulation is cellular shades, also called cell shades and honeycomb shades. They come in single, double and triple cells. The triple cell shades offer the greatest level of insulation both for hot and cold weather.
There are other choices. Many types of window treatments and coverings now offer significant energy efficiency so you are not stuck with only one choice. For example, may manufacturers of window blinds and shades offer insulated roman shades. This is usually an option that gets added on to the style you choose but, some come this way right from the factory.
Another choice, for those who want the benefits of cellular shades, but the look of drapery-style fabrics, should consider insulating roman panel shades. Panel shades are also called panel track blinds and sliding window panels. Panel shades have overlapping fabric panels on a wheeled track system, something akin to vertical blinds.
Another idea is to maximize the sun's heat with solar shades, or sheer shades. With these window shades you can make use of the natural light during daylight hours. Most solar shades and sheer shades offer the privacy you desire but still allow the sunlight to warm you room's interior.
Aside from energy-efficient cellular shades, roman shades or panel shades, you can also insulate your home by using weather-stripping to seal windows and doors. Also try placing foam draft blockers behind electrical cover plates. You may also want to use insulation to wrap your water heater and water pipes, preventing heat loss during transfer.
While I am on the subject of energy efficiency, I would remind you that one of the simplest things you can do to save energy is replace your regular light bulbs with compact florescent bulbs (CFLs). CFLs will last up to ten times longer than regular light bulbs, while using only 1/4 of the energy! Many manufacturers offer CFLs that are warmer in color and look very much like regular bulbs. They can save energy and showcase your interior design style at the same time.
All of these things I have mentioned, especially the window shades and blinds are not exactly cheap. But, they will pay off in the long run. Sometimes, we just don't have the money to make our homes as energy efficient as we'd like. I certainly understand this dilemma. If you are in this situation, consider purchasing one piece at a time, over many months, even years. That is what I did while living in the Northeast. I lived in one of those old New England homes with like 50 windows. There was no way I could buy cellular shades for the entire house all at once. So, I started slow and purchased shades for the living room, then the bedrooms and so on.
It is important to note that pleated blinds or shades do not offer the same insulation as cellular shades even though they look similar. Good luck and stay warm! - David Brooks

Alternatives To Window Blinds For Privacy
Some windows require privacy all of the time; pretty much all windows require privacy some of the time. The challenge is finding a window treatment that meets the need for privacy while complementing the aesthetics of light, draperies and other décor.
There are a number of blinds that provide privacy, from simple rolling vinyl blinds, to venetians, shutters, and others. Most are able to provide complete privacy; however, in order to do so, they also block most natural light. While venetians and shutters can be adjusted to allow light in, they do so at the expense of privacy.
More and more home and business owners are installing window films for privacy. Unlike dark, black-out tints often used in automobiles, today's decorative window films provide privacy that allows for the flow of natural light and blend with existing décor.
Decorative window films are available in a wide variety of textures and colours. Colourless frosts and patterns allow a great deal of light and will not compete with room colours. On the other hand, the endless array of textured and coloured films available allows decorators to choose a window film that enhances their décor.
For those with a flare for the creative, decorative window films may be graphic cut, with a design or pattern. Long used by businesses, cutting frosted window films with a company name or logo, achieves the look of etched glass. More and more decorators are discovering the benefits of using this technique in residential windows and doors. Rather than a business logo, a residential graphic can be generated in endless varieties of patterns, using computer technology to plot and cut the graphics. Results are impressive and much more interesting than a simple blind.
Window films need not cover the entire glass. In many cases, covering the windows from the bottom up provides adequate privacy from passers-by, while allowing an outward view through clear glass at the top. This type of solution is optimal for windows that overlook unsightly views, such as busy streetscapes or garbage bins. You can block the unwanted view, while maintaining prospects of trees and sky by applying privacy films in this manner.
For privacy that does not block outdoor sightlines at any level, decorators may choose a reflective window film. This solution, most suitable in commercial settings, does not provide the same privacy at night when lights are on, therefore drapes will be required to maintain an effective 24 hour block.
Because decorative window films allow natural light in, they reduce the need for electric lighting and therefore, conserve energy and save money. In addition to privacy, other specialty window films can also be used to protect interiors from UV damage, solar heat gain, and even provide security.
To block intrusion without blocking light or competing with your décor, consider decorative window films for privacy. A good window film will come with a long warranty, yet most films are removable, should you feel the need for a change in the future. Choose a reputable window film company that can provide you with references to ensure quality films and professional installation.

Blinds to Go
Blinds are very much in demand this time. Most household would prefer using blinds rather than the conventional thick curtains. There are many benefits in using blinds and shades. One of those is the easy to clean feature of the blinds. Blinds do not need to be washed in order for it to be cleaned. You can simply wipe it with cloth to remove the dusts.
In the US alone, there are already many companies that manufacture blinds. Most of these companies begin doing the business since 1950’s. They have made their own legacies and marketing strategies to attract more customers. Most of the blind manufacturers would make their own product and sell it on a factory price.
Blinds to Go is one of the companies that make their own product and retail it at a factory price. Their marketing involves simple customer relationship building and low price but strategic selling.
Blinds to Go was established by David Shiller. Before the conceptualization of Blinds to Go, David Shiller literally travels all around Quebec to sell his product door-to-door. It was in 1954 when he officially opened a store named Au Bon Marché in Montreal. During his first years in the business he sells whatever product he can sell, until 1976 when Stephen Shiller, David’s son, joined the company and proposed a new business. Stephen later convinced his father to focus to one product to sell; blinds. They started selling blinds bought from other manufacturer and later got an idea to make their own blinds for further customer service. By doing so, they can sell their blinds for low price or termed as factory price. They can also deliver the blinds faster unlike when the blinds need to be ordered from another company.
The store later expanded and customer demand becomes greater. The profit of the company increased as the demand and the customers also increased. The store grew literally and the Shillers are obliged to add personnel to help them manage the business. Later on, Au Bon Marché became the store where everybody shops for blinds and shades in Quebec. In a span of 5 years, the store became bigger as it expanded about six times. There was a time when the company has to hire 17 Managers and 168 Sales Associates to help them run the business.
This time, the Shillers have already opened more than 120 superstores all over Canada and US. These superstores operate under Le Marché du Store ad Blinds To Go.

What Constitutes A Modern Window Treatment
Window treatment nowadays is making a big comeback in most homes. Light colored, fresh, minimal and translucent designs are what decorators usually look for and apply for the modern window treatment. Most people use curtains and blinds to their windows because it gives more character to their room. Some decorators use shades of paint and different fabric textures to blend with these curtains and blinds and match the home's mood and style. There are also Venetian blinds with different colors. They may come as vintage inspired which could create more impression to the room.
Blinds are becoming more popular in a modern home that requires a window treatment. You can see them in almost every room of the house. They are trendy and you can choose from a wide array of varieties from shops and stores out there. Of course, the most common and the cheapest are those with the white color as they are classic. Modern styles of blinds have also come out and they have become more hip and you will enjoy having them in your home.
Blinds are very great for bathrooms, kitchens, living rooms and other rooms of the home. They could hold certain amounts of humidity therefore; they are not only for adorning the home but also for protection. They come in horizontal and vertical styles. Dust does not easily build up on them and they are very easy to clean. Maintaining them is also a lot easier compared to the other implements.
An addition to what modern blinds have to offer is that there are types now which come with remote controls. This feature could make it easier for residents of the home to open and close the blinds. It can also serve as a safety measure to avoid being caught by the sharp edges of the blinds.
If you want added color, texture and a more special touch to your room, you can use curtains for your window treatment. Curtains are traditional and are common in old homes. Now, they have undergone changes and become more modern in appearance and presentation. You could choose from different styles that would suit your preference and budget.

There are a lot of varieties in wooden blinds, such as vertical blinds, woven wooden blinds, faux wood blinds and wood mini blinds. They are available in a range of colors, stains, sizes and shades and can be made from different kinds of wood. Window wood blinds can be made to order and can be fitted with additional features such as fabric tapes, cord-want tilt and motorization, UV control, light-blocking, and anti static control.
Wood binds should be used for rooms that have a stable temperature and relatively low humidity in order to make them long lasting.
Basswood binds is the top grade wood for wooden blinds. The bass wood is light, and therefore raising the blinds is convenient. Basswood is also more appropriate for stained wooden blinds. While wooden blinds tend to be more expensive, their timeless beauty and durability when decorating a room make them the number one choice.
Faux wood blinds are another option, and are more commonly used because they are less expensive and have a genuine appearance. Another advantage is that they are not easily affected by temperature fluctuations and are more stable. They are available in colors ranging from solid colors to ‘stained’ finishes.
These blinds are ideal for use in the bathroom, because they come pretreated to resist moisture and heat better than traditional wooden blinds.
Woven blinds on the other hand, are made from select natural wood and are uniquely textured. This tends to add a relaxed, casual look to any room. Since the blinds are made from bamboos, reeds and grasses, they create a calming effect to the whole room.
It is also important to determine the size of the slats when buying wooden blinds because they will be different sizes for doors and for windows.
Overall, wooden blinds found on windows and doors are major decorating elements. They also provide privacy and add beauty to the rest of the room. The natural look that they give makes them a better choice over traditional curtains or shutters, and they look pretty from both the inside and the outside.
Wooden blinds are attractive, easily customized to fit into any décor, and are very popular. They definitely add a touch of class and give the room a unique style.

How To Make The Decision Between Blinds And Curtains For Your Windows
When it comes to choosing a window covering that will meet the various needs of your rooms, there is no one formula to use or refer to. Both selections possess their own set of advantages, as well as disadvantages. Final decisions should be based upon your personal preference. After all, you are the one who is going to look at them every day.
Throughout the years, curtains have been a popular choice. You probably grew up as a child with curtains shielding your living room activities from the sun, as well as delivering a certain level of privacy. Curtains have always been known to provide a satisfying addition to room decor through the many available colors and designs. The setback with choosing to use curtains throughout your entire home is that there is no way of acquiring one pair to match up every window throughout your household.
Sometimes, curtains deliver the best option for the particular look you wish to accomplish throughout your home.
Choosing the right curtains is a must or you will be left with undesirable results. For instance, if you are dead set on putting up sheer curtains, you should know that your privacy levels have gone down a considerable amount of notches. If privacy is important to you, shades that allow you to shield yourself from outsiders may be an option for when you don't want others to be able to see into your house.
For extra privacy, select curtains that are thick. Also, when it is dark outside and you have the lights on in the house, curtains will allow others from the outside to see what is going on inside. You will also have to remove your curtains from their position, so that they may be cleaned. This helps to retain their appearance, but is often a bothersome task.
As for choosing blinds for your home, you should know that you will most likely receive a versatility look that offers a nice level of privacy. With blinds, you will also be able to enjoy the luxury of added control. For example, you can determine how much light you wish to let into your home by adjusting the length of your blinds. If it is a variety or style that you seek in your blinds, you will be disappointed. The farthest you will get in terms of style are a wide range of colors.
Maintenance of your blinds is rather easy. All that is needed is soapy water and a cloth. In minutes, a simple rubdown has them looking like new. For added style, pair blinds with attractive fabric draping or valances. This allows you to tie in the style or color scheme of a room. Often, you will find that blinds by themselves are quite unappealing. This tends to reflect a look of not being completed or poor design taste.
Sometimes, the two worlds are blended and both curtains and blinds are used for each and every window in a home. This means that you can have your privacy, as well as be able to experiment with a variety of design concepts. You will also be able to enjoy the freedom of adjusting the light within a room while matching the fabrics of your home decor. Alone, each selection has its ups and downs. Together, you may be dealing with a match made in heaven.

Four Reasons To Save Money With Insulated Blinds
If ever there was a winter that you needed insulated blinds it was this winter. Temperatures dropped, the wind blew, snow drifts got taller and taller and all the while you sit there listening to the sound of the electric meter or the fuel gage running, wishing there was something you could do about the cost.
Winter are expensive to say the least. But there is one area where you can take control and do something about "old Man Winter". Here is a list of the benefits of insulated window blinds.
Keep your family cozy and warm
Your family will be able to use the whole house. They won't need to stay away from the outside wall and windows when the wind is blowing and the snow is drifting. Regular window allow the cold air in the house even double pain windows still allow the wind to sneak in.
With insulated blinds you gain back the outside walls and your family will be able to use the whole house again. With some of the new cell shades you gain not one but three dead air spaces which I'm sure you know is the best insulating factor you can have.
Those dead air spaces stop the cold period. With a r-factor somewhere around R-6 you'll smile every time walk by your cell shades, knowing your family is warm and cozy and you still have a jingle in your pocket.
Save You Money
Talk about a jingle in your pocket, smiles come when you see the fuel bill going down. You know from listening to the news that fuel costs are only going to get higher.
Especially with the situation in the middle east not getting any better and if any thing getting worse, fuel costs will only do one thing and that is to go higher.
The politicians will do all in their power to keep the price lower this year because it is an election year but watch out after the election, up-up-and away!
With quilted insulated blinds you can achieve an R-factor of R-7! That is nothing to sneeze at. The higher the R-factor, the more money you save. The more money you save the more you have for vacations and fun times with the family. Save Energy
Now I know that when I say you will save energy, you are probably not going to do a dance and get too excited. Thats all right! But every drop of energy we save we give that energy as an inheritance to our children and our grandchildren.
The bible say's "that a good man leaves an inheritance to his children and grandchildren."
I would also like to see our country less dependent on foreign companies for our energy needs. Countries like Venezuela and the Persian Golf countries don't have our best interests at heart. As a matter of fact some of them would like nothing better than to see the United States fail.
I like the idea of saving for my children and grandchildren. The great thing about saving with insulated blinds is that you get to enjoy the warmth and comfort of your house while saving. The opposite of that is to spend more money, and be uncomfortable in your house when " old Man Winter" comes blowing"
I can enjoy the awesome good looks of insulated blinds
Whether it's cell shades, quilted window coverings or a natural insulator like wood blinds You get to enjoy their natural good looks all year round. Instead of being something you put up for a season like storm windows you get to gaze with rapture at your insulated blinds all year long.
You can sit in front of your insulated blinds with a hot chocolate in the winter time or with a iced tea in the summer and gently soak up the ambiance and cozy mood these blinds reward you with.

Which Is Better - Vertical Or Horizontal Blinds
If you are looking for blinds and shades that will add a splash of characteristic to your home decor, you must consider vertical blinds, or their cousin the horizontal blind. While they are similar in their practicality, they are unique in the way they affix themselves themselves to your window. As one of the most respectable choices for window coverings, these decorations for your windows present your window with a touch of class, while giving your family the privacy you insist upon.
Verticals normally have a manual rotating function with the ability to have light come through a little or a lot. When completely closed, the slats overlap to provide whole light block out. Attached to the window frame at the top and bottom, they frequently have a chain to make sure they stay in order and in place. More expensive, modern varieties are weighted down at the bottom and do not need a chain.
Vertical blinds come in a wide variety of thicknesses and materials. Some are embossed with patterns, and a whole pallet of colors is available. The more block-out they provide, usually, the more expensive they will be. Some vertical blinds are very wide so you call for less individual slats to cover the window, where others are narrower and the blind will have more slats.
Horizontals always come with cords that are attached at the lefthand or righthand side of the window. This feature enables you to turn a wooden or plastic rod that activates the cords to operate the slats to turn. These slats are positioned vertically and are always attached at the top of the window. You can open or close as you like, and screen the sun allowed through into your room.
Blinds are great for your kitchen or bathroom, and any place in the home where you use water. Where curtains and fabric window coverings can be broken and stained from splashing and steam, blinds are easy to wipe over and are often waterproof. Verticals can be easier to clean of the two types, and offer the supplemental bonus of not holding the dust like horizontals do.
Also, today there are electrical controlled blinds that you operate with a remote. This type have many safety features, which is great if you have kids and pets that can pull at the blinds and cords that are hanging. Usual slats can have pointed edges and spaces between each slat, which kids could pop their little heads in and get stuck. It's important to consider the safety that vertical blinds may not provide in this regard, and also remember there are so many other forms of window coverings if blinds aren't suitable.
There are certain opinions on whether blinds are an effective and practical way of presenting your windows. With a lot of popular colors and textures available, you are bound to be able to find one to suit your decor. Some people are looking for something that is more chic and today the custom made variety is more expensive and more diverse in the range available. They are considered to be more favorable for the office and for people who like a contemporary modern feel.

Enclosed Blinds Provides An Elegant Look
Mini blinds are often known for their tangled strings, lack of quality and clutter at your windows, but you no longer have to put up with that. In fact you can choose the enclosed blinds. This style blind is built in to a frame where you will have a lever to open and close the blinds.
You will need to measure you window exactly. The enclosed blind is designed to be a frame so that you do not have the little brackets for the top of the window, but an actual frame. Think of an enclosed blind like a storm window. It has a frame that fits in the window. The lever on the frame lets you open and close the blind with ease. While it does work off of a string mechanism the strings are inside the frame and cannot get tangled. It is the same system as the mini blinds with the strings interlaced between slats. The slates on the enclosed blinds can be opened for minimum light or completely opened for more light.
Installation of the enclosed blinds is actually easier than the typical mini blind because of its frame. As one piece you can secure the enclosed blind right to the window with little fuss. The brackets hook into the frame of the window with ease. It is also a cleaner process because no drilling is required.
You can even use two separate enclosed blinds on the same window to offer you more darkness in a bedroom. This means you have the enclosed blinds on the upper and lower sashes on the windows. These blinds are also child proof. You don't have to worry about your child damaging or twisting the strings or pulling the blinds off the windows.
There are many choices when you are looking for enclosed blinds in regards to colors. Another great thing about enclosed blinds is that you have to custom design the blinds to fit your windows. This means you are sure to have the correct size blinds for all your windows rather than worrying about finding one for the odd ball window.
Enclosed window blinds offer you more protection from the heat and sun when you are trying to get some rest and save electricity. It is important to know that these types of blinds tend to be a little bit more expensive than your average mini blind, but the durability and style will last longer than any mini blind. The best way to obtain these blinds is to shop at a specialty blind store in your local area.

Window Blinds and Curtains- Top Decorating Tips
Many people consider window treatments as finishing touches to the room’s decor, and usually pay little or no attention to this interior detail. Sometimes when you start improving your blinds or curtains, the budget often runs low. However, window treatments should never be neglected, as they play an important part in emphasizing the individual character of the place.
In modern apartments, especially in lofts and penthouses with large windows, window treatments should be given a lot of attention, at the earliest possible design stage. Choosing the right color and style of window treatments will make the room not only welcoming and comfortable, but will also highlight its size and ambience, giving perspective to the place.
White is often a color of choice for many decorators, because it is really hard to go wrong with white. Timeless and versatile, white provides a unifying base for the most window designs. Remember, though, that there are different kinds of white, which a skilled decorator may mix in one room altering the feel from warm to cold to increase the impact from your window blinds or curtains.
Today home decorating makes a comeback from the minimalist era when whites and beiges were abound putting a long-time spell of pure minimalist designs. The most sought-after design of modern window treatments is fresh, minimal, translucent and light-colored, but today people seek window curtains and blinds that can give real character and individuality to the room.
Variety of paint shades and fabric textures allows blending blinds and curtains perfectly with the furniture to match the apartment’s light and mood. Venetian blinds are now available in a range of vintage-inspired muted colors or even in bright plain colors. With carefully placed color accents, you can avoid making the room too impersonal.
In terms of decor trends, curtains have gone in two opposite directions: they became either more “feminine” made of embroidered and patterned fabrics with rich draping; or minimal as Calvin Klein suit, made of natural fabrics in neutral tones. To add a personal touch, you may choose to place curtains on elaborate cast metal rings or find an antique details in flee markets.
When choosing the color of your window blinds or curtains, think about what light is your apartment getting from outside. The light in apartments changes throughout the day and through seasons as well. In a single apartment, when choosing window blinds or curtains, thought should be given to the orientation of rooms and the warmth of light that will enter them. Rooms that receive light early in the day, or not at all, usually need some warming up with color. Rooms that benefit from the afternoon or sunset sun will receive reddish light and therefore need less artificial warmth. The new finishes on blinds, such as brushed aluminum, produce a nice cool effect on windows that need cool light from the outside.
There are some optical tricks that have to be considered when you pick your window curtains or shades. Denser window treatments, such as Venetian blinds, curtains and vertically striped fabrics can improve the look of the room with low ceiling. Roman and Venetian blinds can create a warm relaxed atmosphere.
Expert decorators say that window treatment must receive the same attention and investment as any other piece of furniture, especially if your windows overlook a spectacular landscape. If the view from your window leaves little to imagination, you can improve the situation by decorating the window with forgiving blinds in carefully chosen colors.

People use wood blinds in many different rooms. Bedrooms and living rooms are probably the most popular places for wood blinds. In both places, the wood provides a warm and elegance to the space that can't be matched by other blinds.
Wooden window blinds do require a bit more care and upkeep than vinyl blinds. They need to be kept lubricated and this often means a yearly re-staining or oiling. They can also warp or crack if they are placed in areas where there is a high humidity factor. This is the reason why many people don't put wood blinds in their bathrooms or kitchens. In those places, you'll probably want to go with a faux wood blind to avoid these problems.
You may find that wood blinds are a bit more expensive than blinds made from other materials. For some individuals, this is a consideration when choosing a blind. Others want the look and warmth of wood blinds and cost isn't a consideration.
Like blinds made of other materials, a wooden window blind will give you added privacy and the ability to control the amount of light entering your home. You can open, close, or adjust the blinds for the level of privacy and light control that you want.
Wooden window blinds will give your home an added elegance and style. You can customize your blinds in many different ways to make them work even better for you. When you are looking to upgrade the look for your home, wooden window blinds should be at the top of your list.

Wood Window Blinds - Are They Right For You?
If you want to add elegance and charm to your home, consider installing wood window blinds. These blinds can be stained to match any décor. They can be made from a variety of different woods to please even the pickiest home owner. Read on to discover some of the greatest advantages of choosing wood window blinds for your home.
Wood window blinds can be custom made to fit any window in your home. If you have a preference, you may choose the type of wood that you would like your blinds to be made from. Having wood window blinds will give you maximum privacy and add a sense of warmth to the room.
Wooden window blinds will also increase the energy efficiency of your home. They are very effective in keeping out the sun and heat on those hot summer days and they can keep the heat in your home and the cold out on those cold winter days.
Wood window blinds are usually more expensive than fabric blinds or aluminum blinds, but they are more durable. The initial investment will be worth it in the long run. Wood blinds have been known to increase the value of your home if you ever decide to sell.
However, if you don't have the money to invest in genuine wood window blinds, there are other options. You may choose faux wood blinds for your window covering. These blinds are less expensive and in most cases, it is hard to tell the difference between real wood and faux wood. They are durable and easy to clean.
Another advantage to the faux wood blinds is that they can be used in areas of high humidity. Real wood may be a problem in these areas due to warping or cracking of the wood. This is not a problem with the faux wood blind because they are made of a durable moisture resistant vinyl.
Keeping these blinds clean is very easy no matter if you choose real wood or faux wood. If you have real wood blinds, all you have to do is dilute some wood cleaner or polish in water and dip a towel or other soft cloth into the solution. Just wipe down the individual slats with this solution to remove dust and give the wood a nice shine.
Cleaning faux wood blinds is even easier. They can be vacuumed using the brush attachment. If they are soiled they can be wiped clean with warm water and a mild soap.
Comparison shop before you make the decision on what type of wood blinds to purchase. Consider your budget and lifestyle. If you plan on installing them yourself, make sure that you know how to do it correctly to prevent damage to the wood blind or your window. Once installed, sit back and enjoy your new wood window blinds.

Pioneering Eco-frendly Designed Window Blinds
As the globe warms and energy costs soar, eco-friendly design has become a hot topic, which has also reached the window covering industry. Being ecologically smart is a responsibility, as well as a way to save money. High energy consumption is not only expensive; it is draining our natural resources. While some companies are just now seeking design solutions for saving energy at home, Hunter Douglas, the nation’s leading manufacturer of custom window blinds and shades, has been pioneering energy-saving solutions at the window for decades.
It’s a simple scientific fact: heat moves towards cold. In winter months heat is drawn to the cold glass of windows to escape a home. In warmer months, heat moves toward the windows so that air conditioners have to work two to three times harder. While blinds and shades are very fashionable and give light control, some products are designed to protect against heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer, while reducing heating and cooling costs by as much as 25 percent.
The energy-efficient blinds and shades
The concept for Duette shades – the first highly efficient, yet fashionable window covering introduced in 1985 – was developed during the energy crisis of the late 1970s when Wendell Colson, now Senior Vice President of Product Development for Hunter Douglas, was a young architect and inventor in Massachusetts. “One night as I was shivering in bed, a double curtain came together in an irregular folding pattern with a honeycomb-like configuration, capturing air between the folds,” said Colson. “I saw this vertically, but I thought if we put it together horizontally you would have a highly energy-efficient window treatment because air would literally be trapped in the honeycomb cells.” Now the most comprehensive offering on the market, Duette honeycomb shades are available in a broad assortment of fabrics and colors with a variety of opacities, pleat sizes, state-of-the-art lifting systems and design options.
Today as the nation is experiencing another crisis in energy costs, Hunter Douglas once again revolutionizes the category with its new Duette® Architella Collection – providing the ultimate in energy efficiency at the window. Duette Architella honeycomb shades feature a unique, patented construction consisting of a honeycomb nestled within a honeycomb. This provides two more air pockets than traditional honeycomb shades and dramatically increases R-values, which measure a product’s ability to keep heat in and cold out. The higher the R-value, the better the product is at retaining indoor warmth. For example, with an R-value of 4.00, a product stops about 75 percent of heat loss through the window.
Just as energy efficient is the Duette Triple Honeycomb cell shade, called Phenomena Three, which has an outstanding value when trapping heat or cold inside the triple honeycomb constructed cells. These figures are for double-pane windows with Low-E glass.
Blinds made to last and preserve
All Hunter Douglas window fashions are manufactured to the highest standards of quality and design for unsurpassed durability and backed by a Lifetime Limited Warranty. Moreover, the UV protection offered by most of their products also helps preserve other furnishings.
Ultraviolet light is often called “the invisible enemy” as it is the invisible component of the sun’s radiation and can be extremely damaging. Ultraviolet literally means “beyond the violet” in the visible spectrum of light. It enters the house as sunlight but will eventually fade floors, furniture, upholstery and drapery fabrics, carpeting and valuable artwork. With prolonged sun exposure, natural, undyed fabrics typically become yellowed. Later, fibers will weaken, making furnishings look old and worn before their time.
Certain Hunter Douglas blinds can block up to 99 percent of UV rays. Look for a “% UV blockage” rating. The higher a product’s rating, the better the home’s interior is protected from UV rays.
The concern of Hunter Douglas for our planet and your home does not stop at the window. The company is committed to the highest safety and environmental standards in its manufacturing processes as well as to generous charitable outreach. Hunter Douglas blinds and window shades products can be find at the online window covering dealer Ace of Shades Window Coverings

Loft Beds And Dorm Decorating Tips
The small size of the living area is the major issue for the dorm room decorator. When working with such a compact space, including pieces of furniture that double up in purpose and function increases the room's usable space. This way, you can use all the space of the room, from the floor (for storage) to the ceiling (for sleeping.) For example, you can pair a desk and a bed by using a loft bed. You can increase the storage space with a bunk bed. All these combinations offer tons of creative solutions for a smart student decorator.
A loft bed takes advantage of the room space under and above your bed. With a loft bed, you can use the space underneath to place a desk or even a futon; with a bunk bed, you get a roomy storage that can replace a chest of drawers. The available space can be used for useful shelves to house books, magazines or other items.
Loft and bunk bed units can be purchased in a store or built from scratch by a handy do-it-yourselfer. The space under the loft bed can be used in many ways. For example, you can arrange a secluded study area simply by adding an armchair, a bookcase and a lighting fixture. Bunk beds help save space doubling as storage, so you can get rid of your large chest of drawers. You can "find" some space in bunk chairs that can hold extra clothes, linens, and bedding. Additional options that increase storage under a loft or bunk bed include adjustable pole shelving and filing modules available at IKEA.
If you don't want your dorm look like military quarters choose a favorite color scheme and introduce small elements of color throughout the dorm space. You can visibly eliminate clutter by storing your belongings in bank boxes or baskets which you can decorate with matching fabric or wallpaper.
If you're feeling more adventurous, inject some color into the room with paint. Choose a statement shade and create a focal point by painting one wall. Alternatively, if you have a small room, make the available space appear larger by choosing softer shades that coordinate with the existing room décor. One of the easiest ways to make a dorm appear relaxed and inviting is with lighting. Choose your lights appropriately depending on whether you want a soft glow or a bright, light space.
To liven up your loft bed you can use washable slipcovers in bright colors and easy to wash fabrics such as cotton-polyester mix. You can buy a matching set of covers for the extra seating space under your loft bed. You can buy a great throw to decorate your loft bed in a novelty store such as Pier 1 or even on a flea market.
When designing your dorm space around a bunk or loft bed, remember that even on a budget it is possible to create a tidy and uncluttered room where everything has a suitable place. No matter if you will be sharing a dorm room with a relative or friend, you still can maximize creativity, minimize clutter and help to create a one-of-a-kind dorm décor.

Curtains? Pole Or Rack?
When I walk into a room, if it's decorated properly, my eyes are drawn to the curtains. You may not realize it, but fabric choices and color are not the only parts of your curtain that make a statement. Often, how they are hung can be just as much a part of the style. Your choices are very simple - pole or track?
Pole Curtains
Curtain poles, (sometimes referred to as rods) go beyond function and extend into part of the window design itself. Curtains that are made to hang from a pole are made to reveal the pole when the curtains are pulled open. If they are cut in a "tab top" fashion or something similar, then the pole becomes part of the window treatment even when the curtains are drawn closed.
Your pole options are nearly as various as your curtain choices. There is virtually a pole for every room design! There are metal poles, wooden poles, ornate poles or plain poles. Whatever color or style you are using in your room, you can find a pole that will blend well with it. Besides the actual pole itself, there are decorative sinnials that attach to the end of the pole to add a decorative touch.
If you have a room with windows that meet at a corner, you can always opt for bay poles. These are poles that curve with the corner so that you don't have to have a break between the curtains of each window. Bay Poles allow the curtain to slide fluidly from one window, through the curve of the corner, over to the adjacent window.
Track Curtains
Track Curtains offer a completely different style than Pole Curtains. The track is not generally part of the design and is usually made in such a way that it is completely covered by the curtain whether open or drawn shut. Track curtains are ideal for layered curtains and have the benefit of being controlled by a draw cord. People often use track curtains for a more formal look.
Track Curtains also have a Bay option to keep curtains flowing between adjacent windows. One thing to keep in mind about track curtains is that it takes a little bit more work to take them down and put them back up. So, if you plan on having them cleaned, you need to keep in mind that you'll want to research how to remove them from their hooks and where the hooks are located for reassembly.

Cellular Shades Vs. Pleated Shades, a Battle Royal
There are a lot of fairly confusing terms when it comes to window treatments. Like, what’s the difference between a shade and a blind? Or, what is the difference between sheer shades and cellular shades? If you walked into a window blinds store today, you would probably be overwhelmed and forced to take the advice of a salesman who just wants a bigger commission. While I will not try to clear up all the window treatments mysteries, I will enumerate the differences between pleated shades and cellular shades, also called honeycomb shades, so that when and if you become interested in purchasing them, you will be armed with the information you need to make an informed decision.
First, it is fair to say that pleated shades and cellular shades are like cousins. They both have similar looks with crisp pleats, kind of like the bellows of an accordion. Both come with the usual upgrades like Top down, Bottom up, cordless, continuous cord loop, and even motorization. Just to be clear the cordless option allows you to raise or lower the shade by pulling on the bottom rail, a good option if you have children. A continuous cord loop is basically a clutch mechanism that keeps the cord at the same length when you raise or lower the blind so that the cord isn’t either way up high or all the way to the floor. The Top down, Bottom up option is just like it sounds, you can lower the top half of the shade or the bottom half of the shade, or both. Additional options for both shade types include a wide variety of colors and fabrics, as well as light filtering or privacy liners.
One of the main differences between cellular and pleated shades is their inner construction – the stuff between the pleated fabric. As I mentioned both can come with liners of varying opacity, but cellular shades have a honeycomb structure between the pleats that act as an efficient insulator for hot or cold conditions. When I lived in the Northeast, cellular shades were a common window treatments feature because of the cold, cold winters. But, they work just as well for hot climates. Pleated shades will help insulate too, just not nearly as well.
Other differences between cellular and pleated shades are that cellular shades come in a variety of pleat sizes. In fact they come in six varieties: 3/8”, 7/16”, ½”, 9/16”, ¾” and 1 ¼”. The size pleat you choose really only depends on the look you want, the most common being the ¾” and the 3/8”. Cellular shades are also available in single, double and triple cells; the more cells, the greater the cost but also the greater the insulation. So, if you really want an energy efficient home keep this in mind as you shop.
The difference in cost between pleated and cellular shades is dependent on how many cells you choose. The difference in cost between a single cell cellular shade and a pleated shade, assuming you went with the same options, is fairly minimal, approximately 20%. As you move into the double and triple cell varieties the cost difference gets quite large. But, if you consider the long term energy savings attribute and can afford the cash outlay, double and triple cell cellular shades are the better choices, even if you don’t live in a place with huge temperature extremes.
Both types of shades look nice but, if you can afford it, I would recommend the cellular shades over the pleated shades for the insulation they provide. – David Brooks

The Different Types Of Blinds
Besides using curtains in your home, you can also use blinds. Blinds are a type of covering similar to curtains, which are used to provide shade and privacy to your home. Blinds are normally attached to the internal side of the window frame. The most important function of blinds is that you can control the amount of light coming into your home.
Blinds come in a large number of varieties. Rollers are the most popular. These can be ones that unwind from the top, or those with a continuous side chain that avoids nasty whiplash effects.
From voiles and smooth silks, to textured linen and rough denim, blinds are made using a wide range of materials.
Rollups are less expensive, and have no springs.
Venetian blinds are now available in slim line, and are made of metal or wood. They have horizontal tilting boards with cords attached, so they can be arranged in a variety of ways. Always keep in mind that some which have a wood effect are in fact plastic.
Slat blinds have several flat horizontal slats, attached to strings so that they can be rotated. This enables you to control the amount of light passing through your window by rotating it up to 170 degrees, or you can also simply raise it up. Rotation can be done by pulling the cord or rotating connector. There are options where both the devices are attached to a rod.
Purchasing Mini-Blinds
There are three options available if you are opting for mini blinds. The easiest to clean and maintain, and the most cost effective, is vinyl. Vinyl is mostly available in white, but they also come in different colors. They usually come in normal sizes, so it is not possible to adjust these according to your requirements.
Another material in which they are available is aluminum. These are available in a variety of colors, and can be made according to your requirements. They are user friendly and can be easily cleaned. The only disadvantage in aluminum is that they can sometimes bend.
Wood is the last and the most expensive material that you can choose. They are very beautiful, and are available in different varieties and colors. Wood blinds need extra care, as harsh cleaners can damage the wood finishing, and water can also damage it.
Installing Mini-Blinds
Installation of mini blinds is easy. You have to decide whether you want the blind attached to the interior of the window frame, or the exterior. Mini blinds are long lasting, which makes them safe investments.
Roman Shades
To add a simple and elegant look to your windows, roman shades are the best. They are available in a variety of materials and different styles, and can work similar to blinds. Roman shades are best for kitchens, and can be combined with curtains if you wish.

Window Blinds And Curtains: Top Decorating Tips
Many people consider window treatments as finishing touches to the room's decor, and usually pay little or no attention to this interior detail.
Variety of paint shades and fabric textures allows blending blinds and curtains perfectly with the furniture to match the apartment's light and mood. Venetian blinds are now available in a range of vintage-inspired muted colors or even in bright plain colors. With carefully placed color accents, you can avoid making the room too impersonal.
In terms of decor trends, curtains have gone in two opposite directions: they became either more "feminine" made of embroidered and patterned fabrics with rich draping; or minimal as Calvin Klein suit, made of natural fabrics in neutral tones.
