Window Blinds – Different Kind Of Blinds

Window blinds have been in usage for long time now covering windows preventing entry of light. The historic evolution of blinds are not very clear, but there are theories that blinds were first designed and used in Venice if one were to go by the popular blind type.

People have been using window blinds for privacy also in addition to light preventing Sun light and eventually heat in summer. Although there are many types of window blinds, one which is a hit with every one is the Venetian blinds.

Varieties of Window Blinds

When we distinguish blinds according to their making, we can differentiate door and window blinds just by their respective sizes. The different kinds of blinds are as follows.

At the top are Venetian blinds because of their popularity. The slats of the blinds are made of plastic or metal. Wooden slats and bamboo slats are not unusual and they are known by their respective names only. For example wooden blinds and bamboo blinds. The usual width of slats is 50 mm but you can occasionally find someone using blinds of upto 120 mm width too. One window on a wide wall having 120 mm slats add to the aesthetics of the room. Venetian blinds have a couple of equally popular variants too.

1. Mini blinds; here the slats are pretty narrow and you can’t expect it to be wider than 19 mm.

2. Vertical blinds; slats are vertical here thus giving it the name. Additionally, you can find the slats made of stiffen fabric. It is possible to turn the slats by 90 degrees when they hang from their ends from a guide rail.

Slat type window blinds open by turning in place which is facilitated by turning rotator attachments connected to strings.

There are special types in window blinds, such as solid blinds referring to those which can be opened by pulling up or by pushing up only. These can’t be opened in place as they are made of one solid sheet material. Examples of these are here.

Holland Blinds: One most common Holland blind type is woven wood blind, woven by simple strings so that they can just roll up or fold up to open. These are preferred in tropical conditions because of their higher efficiency in Sun control. The natural appearance gives an exquisite feel and gels totally with the ambience.

Pleated Blinds: Stiffened fabric made blinds just pull-up to open and when pulled up they fit the recess at the top.

Honeycomb Blinds: You can call these as cellular shades also because of their two or more layered cellular construction. These provide better insulation thanks to their cellular design.

Tips For Choosing Window Blinds

In many homes and most offices, blinds are commonly used to give shade and privacy to the place. Unlike curtains, the amount of light that can be let in can be controlled if you have installed blinds on your windows.

Many people feel that the problem with having blinds is the installation. It may be true. But these people neglect the fact that there are also other things that have to be considered before purchasing blinds, not only the color and the size are important when choosing blinds for one's home or office windows.

Here is some information.

* Style

Blinds can come in different styles, the most popular of which is the Venetian blinds. Decide on what style you wanted depending on the functionality and design of your windows.

Roller Shades - these are made specially treated opaque or vinyl fabric that is wrapped around a dowel, which employs a spring or a beaded cord system to roll the fabric up or down. This is good if you want to have complete privacy and to protect the furniture from fading. The ends can be straight or shaped, and trimmings or contrasting braid can be added as design.

Roman Shades - these blinds have a cord woven thru the fabric that allows you to raise or lower the shade in an accordion pattern.

Venetian Blinds - or horizontal blinds, have horizontal panels, made of wood or aluminum, which can be adjusted to change the level of sunlight that can be allowed in the room. These are available in different widths ranging from 16 mm to 50 mm.

Pleated Shades - these function similarly with Venetian blinds and have flat horizontal fabric panels. To let light enter from the top of the windows, you can have those that have "top-down" design.

Vertical Blinds - have vertical panels that can be adjusted to control the amount of light that enters. It can also be pulled to one side or both sides of the window to allow total natural illumination. Different types of fabric may be used in sizes from 89mm to 127mm.

Honeycomb Shades - are also known as cellular shades. These shades, thru layers of fabric capable of filtering light, can let light in and keep the heat or cold outside, thus giving the room insulation to save on your energy bills.

Woven Wood Shades - These are usually made of bamboo, and blocks direct sunlight from coming into the room but allow some natural light to come in.

Mini Blinds - are also known as macro, micro or aluminum blinds. These have one-inch or two-inch slats to adjust the amount of light that enters the room.

Shutters - these have parallel slats, or louvers, which can be adjusted to change the level of privacy.

* Measuring and Installing the Blinds

The blinds should be unobstructed that when it is fully extended, it can still hang freely.

For accurate measurements, it is recommended that you use a steel ruler.

* Cutting the Blinds

Cutting the Blinds is necessary to make the blinds fit the size of the windows. Before cutting the blinds, measure the desired width from one edge of the bracket to the other. The size of the winding mechanism should be deducted first before cutting the lath, the tube and the fabric to the correct size.

To cut the tube, a mini hacksaw can be used, while for the fabric, it is recommended that you use a cutting knife or a sharp pair of scissors.

* Cost

Apart from the cost of the blinds itself, also consider the cost for delivery. Delivery costs can add a lot to your purchase so make sure you know the details before placing an order.

Window Blinds And Curtains: Top Decorating Tips

Many people consider window treatments as finishing touches to the room’s decor, and usually pay little or no attention to this interior detail. Sometimes when you start improving your blinds or curtains, the budget often runs low. However, window treatments should never be neglected, as they play an important part in emphasizing the individual character of the place.

In modern apartments, especially in lofts and penthouses with large windows, window treatments should be given a lot of attention, at the earliest possible design stage. Choosing the right color and style of window treatments will make the room not only welcoming and comfortable, but will also highlight its size and ambience, giving perspective to the place.

White is often a color of choice for many decorators, because it is really hard to go wrong with white. Timeless and versatile, white provides a unifying base for the most window designs. Remember, though, that there are different kinds of white, which a skilled decorator may mix in one room altering the feel from warm to cold to increase the impact from your window blinds or curtains.

Today home decorating makes a comeback from the minimalist era when whites and beiges were abound putting a long-time spell of pure minimalist designs. The most sought-after design of modern window treatments is fresh, minimal, translucent and light-colored, but today people seek window curtains and blinds that can give real character and individuality to the room.

Variety of paint shades and fabric textures allows blending blinds and curtains perfectly with the furniture to match the apartment’s light and mood. Venetian blinds are now available in a range of vintage-inspired muted colors or even in bright plain colors. With carefully placed color accents, you can avoid making the room too impersonal.

In terms of decor trends, curtains have gone in two opposite directions: they became either more “feminine” made of embroidered and patterned fabrics with rich draping; or minimal as Calvin Klein suit, made of natural fabrics in neutral tones. To add a personal touch, you may choose to place curtains on elaborate cast metal rings or find an antique details in flee markets.

When choosing the color of your window blinds or curtains, think about what light is your apartment getting from outside. The light in apartments changes throughout the day and through seasons as well. In a single apartment, when choosing window blinds or curtains, thought should be given to the orientation of rooms and the warmth of light that will enter them. Rooms that receive light early in the day, or not at all, usually need some warming up with color. Rooms that benefit from the afternoon or sunset sun will receive reddish light and therefore need less artificial warmth. The new finishes on blinds, such as brushed aluminum, produce a nice cool effect on windows that need cool light from the outside.

There are some optical tricks that have to be considered when you pick your window curtains or shades. Denser window treatments, such as Venetian blinds, curtains and vertically striped fabrics can improve the look of the room with low ceiling. Roman and Venetian blinds can create a warm relaxed atmosphere.

Expert decorators say that window treatment must receive the same attention and investment as any other piece of furniture, especially if your windows overlook a spectacular landscape. If the view from your window leaves little to imagination, you can improve the situation by decorating the window with forgiving blinds in carefully chosen colors.

Fine Window Blinds Are A Versatile Decoration For Today's Home

Blinds can be very utilitarian, even industrial as a window treatment. Among the reasons that they have been popular as window decoration in office and industrial setting is because they are durable, easy to clean, filter sunlight effectively and provide privacy. For all of these same reasons they are also popular as window decorations in homes. The trick was to make them attractive.

Types of windows blinds

Designers and home decorating companies have come up with a wide variety of materials and finishes for blinds. Decorators also use curtains and valences to give windows a much warmer feel. The result has been window treatments that are attractive, bright, airy and contemporary. The types of blinds commonly used in homes today include the following.

1.Venetian. These are still usually made from aluminium; however they may also be plastic. The slats may be 1, 2 or 3 inches wide and are slightly curved. The slats are connected by cords and twill tape. They can be opened, closed, opened at an angle or pulled up to the top of the window. These blinds are very versatile, can be used in any room and are available in many colours. The slats close tightly, providing privacy when desired.

2.Wood slat. Venetian blinds made from wood are also called wood slat blinds. The slats are thicker, and when pulled to the top of the window, will create a thicker stack. They may be stained or painted. Like other styles, the slats can be opened or closed to admit or filter sunlight.

3.Miniblind. These have become very popular in the past 20 years or so. The slats on these blinds are very narrow, either 1/2 or 1 inch wide. They may be aluminium or PVC and come in a wide array of colours. These are a type of Venetian and can be opened, closed or pulled to the top of the window. These are very popular because when closed, they give the window a very smooth appearance.

4.Vertical. Vertical blinds ( http://www.shades-blinds-shutters-guide.com/vertical-blinds.html ) are very popular in both offices and in homes. They may be used for both windows and sliding glass doors where they can be open, closed or pulled to one side. The PVC or metal slats hang from a track across the top of the window or door. The slats may either be connected at the bottom with a chain or cord, or simply hung loose. Some models are electric blinds and can be opened and closed with a remote control unit.

5.Woven. Unlike the styles described above, woven blinds do not have slats that open or close. The slats are very narrow and woven together. Narrow spaces between the slats filter sunlight. More light is admitted by pulling a draw string and rolling the blind up toward the top of the window. Woven blinds do not offer quite as much privacy as Venetians.

Not only do blinds come in a variety of attractive styles, they are also available in a variety of materials. The combination of styles and materials give decorators tremendous versatility in putting together extremely attractive windows. This versatility results in windows that compliment and coordinate well with virtually every taste in room décor. Among the materials used in blinds are the following.

Metal

For years metal, especially aluminium, has been among the most popular materials for blind slats. Metal is durable, easy to clean and long-lasting. It comes in a variety of colours and the slats are available in widths from 1/2 inch to three inches.

Wood

Wood is a popular window dressing material because of the rich beauty and sense of strength it offers. Wood gives a room an aesthetic quality not found with any other material. Wood can be stained or painted a virtually infinite variety of colours. The slats in wooden blinds are generally one to two inches wide. Draw strings are pulled to open or close the slats, thus controlling the amount of light let into the room. Wood is used for both Venetian and woven blinds.

Cane

Cane is used in woven blinds. Cane may be either bamboo or rattan. The slats may be either whole or split pieces of cane. The slats do not open or close, but the small spaces between the pieces of cane admit filtered light into the room.

Vinyl

PVC. Vinyl is used in both Venetian and woven styles. It is easily substituted for metal or wood in Venetian or woven styles. Vinyl looks good for years, is easy to clean and is typically much less expensive than metal or wood.

Fabric

Stiffened fabric is sometimes used as slats. This fabric may also be back with vinyl or metal. Fabric can be used to compliment or coordinate with other fabrics in the room.

Blinds can be used as the sole window treatment or in combination with drapes, curtains and valances. As the sole window treatment, they can make a room look larger and contemporary. Used in combination with curtains and valances, the room can be made to feel softer and smaller. The fabric of curtains or valances softens the hard, linear appearance created by blinds. The possibilities are almost limitless for the home decorator.

The décor in almost every room of the home can include blinds as part or the entire window treatment. A traditional styled living room, for example, looks comfortable and homey with light-coloured Venetians in the windows topped with a scalloped valance. A breakfast nook has a bright and airy feel with woven rattan blinds filtering out the full strength of the morning light. Bedrooms are private and attractive with rich-hued miniblinds softened by floor length double tied back and lined curtains. Small bathrooms seem larger with lightly-coloured Venetians providing privacy while admitting sunlight.

Blinds are colourful, functional and decorative. In combination with curtains and other window dressings they add style and a pleasing linear effect to any room. The blinds of today are a far cry from the sterile and antiseptic windows of my childhood physician's office.

Blinds The Perfect Window Covering

Whether you are decorating for the first time or the thirty first time, adding blinds to your home can be one of the best ways to go about covering up those windows. The dilemma is this. You want the light to stream in through your home. You want the cold (or the heat in summer) to stay out. And, you must be able to have some privacy from those peeping neighbors. So, what can you cover your windows up that will give you all the advantages that you need? Blinds! There are hundreds of options to choose from. Fabric, wood, faux wood and even plastics can be used. Designs are really unlimited. In short, there are few products that can top blinds.

How To Choose Blinds For Your Home

How will you choose the right blinds for your home? With so many various types out there, you may be feeling overwhelmed. The fact is that you can limit your selections in several ways. In doing this, you will have found the perfect blinds for your needs. Here, ask yourself a few questions like these.

· Consider your need first. What do you want the blinds to do for you? Do you want them to allow light in? Do you want them to block light out? If this is the case, then you can find blinds that virtually blacken a room, perfect for those who are sleeping mid day or need a very dark space anytime of the day.

· Another thing to consider is your need for privacy. How much privacy do you need and want? There are several things to consider here. For example, some blinds will allow in rays of sunlight but will effectively block out the peeping tom’s in your area! Some will offer a wide selection of levels of privacy. Finding the right amount is necessary for each individual.

· Consider the room now. Many people like to put blinds throughout the home that are the same. The problem with this is, though, that unless all the rooms have the same design elements, it may not work. By making the blinds work with the room, you can create the allure of style, fashion, and taste better. For example, think about texture. You may be thinking of installing faux wood blinds throughout the home but is this going to match in texture to each room? Think about the texture, the color, the materials, and the overall look for the blinds you add to the room.

· Make sure to think about the size of the blinds. Do you want the blinds to extend over the window edge? Do you want the blinds to fit within the window frame? Or, you may even consider blinds that actually fit within the panels of the window itself for even more space savings.

Overall, choosing the blinds for your home should be like choosing the paint, the carpet, or the wallpaper that you put in a room. Consider all elements of the design and finished product so the finished result is what you want it to be.

Arch Windows Blinds

To add more to the architectural look of the home many houses use the arch window blinds. It not only adds to the architectural essence but also gives a unique look to the house as well. Previously people used to apply a regular shade in front of the window which not only barred the sun light (which was required ) but also barred the architectural uniqueness of the arch window blinds. The present new designs of arch window blinds tackled these problems well with more artistic ideas.
Shift from traditional blinds:
The new designs focused more on maintaining and enhancing the architectural look of the house along with fulfilling its basic purpose of light blockage and privacy. Unlike traditional window blinds, arch window blinds opens top down, having a long cord to fulfill the mechanism effectively rather than using a ladder which would have marred the architectural view.
Styles of Arch window blinds:
The three most effective styles of arch window blinds are:Fan-fold style:In this style the window opens from either one side or the other with blades moving to one side of the window. Thus, collecting all as a vertical line at one end or the other of the arched window.
Dual-Fan-fold style:
In this style of arch window blind both sides opens up to meet in the middle of the window hence forming a vertical line in the middle.
Mini-blind style:
In this style each blind of the window rotates to let the light in. Thus, each blind working as a window on its own hence rightly named as “mini-blinds”.
Enhancing decoration of the house:
The arch window blinds can add more to the décor of the house by using shades that match the color of the rest of the house to give it a more soothing appearance. The fan fold style is more in harmony with the traditional horizontal and vertical style of window blinds. Use of traditional curtains on some portions of the window or wall along the window beautifies it further. They let the user keep the architectural look as well as adjusting the flow of light into the room.
Enhancement in mini-blind style:
Many arch window blinds are enhanced by enclosing mini blinds into a frame that fits well into the arched window. They can b opened and closed not only to adjust the light and guarding privacy but also for insulation purpose in cold weather.

How to Clean Those Dirty Window Blinds

Let’s face it, cleaning window blinds is not much fun, but it’s a job that must be done. So get out the old gloves, and let’s get to work.
Whether your blinds are made of wood, aluminum, vinyl, or fabric, if you clean your blinds on a regular basis, your task will be much easier.
To get started, move any nearby furniture away from the area you’re going to attack first. If you’re planning to use any kind of liquid spray or soapy water, place a thick layer of newspaper or old towels on the floor underneath the window to protect your carpet or flooring. Otherwise, you’ll have another job to do once your blinds are clean.
Here are six (6) tips to make the job easier.
Tip #1: Use the soft brush vacuum cleaner attachment, a lightweight duster or any anti-dust spray and a soft cloth.
Tip #2: Always be sure to clean in the direction your blinds are constructed; clean your vertical blinds vertically and your horizontal blinds horizontally.
Tip #3: Regardless of the method you choose, clean gently to avoid bending or denting your blinds.
Tip #4: Clean blinds in both open and closed positions to ensure the entire slats are thoroughly cleaned.
Tip #5: A great tip is to put a pair of old gloves or socks on your hands and rub them along the blinds to remove the dust.
Tip #6: Another idea is to use a small paintbrush to dust off the slats.
If your blinds have been neglected for a while, you will probably find more than a light film of dust, you may find a thicker layer of dirt. This requires a little more effort to get your blinds really clean. Several methods will do the job; you can try whatever seems best for your particular situation.
Vinyl or Aluminum Blinds
Use a damp sponge, cloth, or paper towel along with an all-purpose cleaning product or soapy water.
For blinds that require heavy cleaning, it may be necessary to remove the blinds from the window and clean them outside with a water hose.
Another method is to line your bathtub with old towels to avoid scratching the surface of the tub, run enough warm water to cover the blinds, add liquid soap, and place the blinds in the open position in the warm soapy water to soak for about thirty minutes. Wipe away the dirt and dry gently; then hang them back up to dry completely.
Fabric Blinds
Light vacuuming
Gently clean with a damp sponge and warm water
Wood Blinds
Light vacuuming
Use an all-purpose wood cleaner and soft cloth
Using the old cotton gloves or socks along with your wood cleaner is a great method for wood blinds
Do not clean wood blinds with water; this may cause your blinds to warp
Regular cleaning will make cleaning your blinds much easier. When you vacuum your floors, take the time to vacuum your blinds as well (at least once a month). This is particularly important for fabric blinds; if dirt is allowed to build up on your fabric blinds, permanent spotting may occur and there isn’t a good method for rectifying this problem.
One last tip: once you’ve cleaned your blinds well, try going over the slats with a sheet of fabric softener to help keep dust from building up so quickly!

Horizontal Or Vertical? Window Blinds For Your Home

Horizontal and vertical window blinds are both sensible options for covering your windows, and they are very similar to each other. The biggest difference between the two types is in the way they attach to the window. Blinds are great for achieving much needed privacy while also being an effective decorating tool.
Verticals normally have a manual rotating function with the ability to have light come through a little or a lot. When completely closed, the slats overlap to provide total light block out. Attached to the window frame at the top and bottom, they commonly have a chain to ensure they stay in order and in place. More expensive, modern varieties are weighted down at the bottom and do not need a chain.
Vertical blinds come in a wide variety of thicknesses and materials. Some are embossed with patterns, and a whole pallet of colors is available to chose from. The more block-out they provide, usually, the more expensive they will be. Some vertical blinds are very wide so you require fewer individual slats to cover the window, where others are narrower and the blind will have more slats.
Horizontal blinds are available with cords that attach to the right and left sides of a window. These blinds feature a plastic or wooden rod that sets in motion the cords operation of turning the slats. The slats hold a horizontal position and normally attach to the top of a window. This allows you to filter the light that is allowed into the room by opening or closing the slats, as you prefer.
Blinds are a marvelous choice of window treatments for the bathroom as well as the kitchen or any other areas in the home that hold humidity. Window blinds are easily wiped clean, are water resistant, and cannot be ruined by steam or splashing of water, unlike fabric curtains. One great feature of vertical blinds is that they do not build up dust like horizontal blinds while also being easier to clean.
There is a variety of vertical and horizontal window blinds to choose from. Many of these window blinds have endearing features, such as those that are operated by remote control. These offer special safety features that keep children or pets from pulling at the blinds or their cords while they hang in the window. However, you should keep in mind that slats normally have sharp edges, as well as spaces between the slats that can possibly create safety issues in a child getting its head stuck in a window blind. The use of vertical blinds may not offer this safeguard, so you may want to consider an alternative form of window treatment if blinds are not suitable to your needs.
Opinions vary as to whether blinds are a practical and effective presentation of window treatments. Although with all the available window treatments of various textures and colors you should be able to find something that expresses your personal taste in home décor. There are some individuals preferring a more stylish appearance and are able to have them custom made to order. Although they are a bit more expensive, they do come in a wide range of choices. Window blinds are a prime choice for the office and offer a modern contemporary atmosphere.

Window Blinds Changing Trends

Interior decorators are always working to make homes beautiful and window coverings have become a very important in maintaining the overall harmony of the room. The orthodox way of covering windows was to use curtains which didn’t give much choice as far as styles and designs were concerned. They were even very heavy and difficult to maintain and clean, as they had to be taken off from the window and then washed. However, trends are changing now and many people are shifting to window blinds. Window Blinds have lots of advantages as they are light, soft; have bigger range of colors, styles and design. They can be controlled by a remote and are even much easier to clean.
Window Blinds Increasing Demand in Us Market
Due to the increase demand of window blinds, more and more companies in US are entering into this sector. Many of them have made their name in window blinds market in the last few decades like Blinds to Go, by selling their products at factory rates and complemented by excellent marketing strategies. This has helped them in attracting increasing number of customers.
Blinds to Go - Marketing Strategy
Blinds to Go is one of the top companies in the field of window blinds manufacturing that have attracted many customers and their customer pool is increasing constantly. This has only been made possible by an excellent but simply strategy; have a friendly, cooperative relationship with customers and sell blinds at very low prices.
Conceptualization of Blinds To Go
Bringing Blinds to Go to the present level wasn’t an easy task. It took David Shiller, the famous pioneer of Blinds to Go, almost 50 years of journey to reach at the present level. Initially he used to travel all over the Canada to sell his products at the doorsteps. Then in 1954, he changed his strategy of selling products at doorstep, and made his own shop in Montreal by the name of Au Bon Marche. In 1976, his son Stephen Shiller after joining the company proposed to totally revamp the business. His plan was to sell a single product i.e. Window Blinds rather than selling many products and not being famous in any, which later turned out to be an excellent and very profitable change. In the infancy stage of Blinds to Go, they sold window blinds purchased from other manufacturers, but in this way they could never compete with other sellers, earn profit and even get the blinds as when they needed. Hence they decided to have their own production company which can produce blinds as well as sell it to customers at market competitive rates. In this case even the production rate was in their hands depending on the market demand. As a result of the ever growing demand of Blinds to Go by customers, Blinds to Go grew rapidly. If you are in Quebec most probably you would be going to Blinds to Go for blinds shopping.

Do It Yourself - Vertical Window Blinds

Vertical window blinds are common alternatives to traditional pull-down blinds. Since vertical blinds are a bit more expensive than traditional blinds, consider installing them yourself to save money. As long as installation instructions are included with your blinds, you will have no problems.
In the age of do-it-yourself, just about anyone can install vertical window blinds. That being said, if you are not a "handy" person, you should probably pay for professional installation of your blinds. Or if installation projects frustrate you, have someone else complete the installation for you.
As with any self-assembly project, carefully unpack and unwrap your blinds. Make sure all installation hardware is included. Do not discard the shipping containers until you have installed the blinds. The instructions specify the tools you need to install the blinds. If any additional hardware, such as screws or nails, is needed to complete the installation, the instructions will indicate accordingly.
Follow installation instruction exactly. The installation process differs for blinds that are mounted inside the window sill and those that are mounted outside the sill. Both types require you to attach the vanes. Vanes are the part of the blind that you open and close. Also called louvers, the vanes are installed one at a time. The tension pulley is installed next.
The final step in the installation process is to attach the valance cover. Once the valance cover is installed, test the blind to make sure it operates correctly. Make sure the blind is sturdy and has no give. If you have children or pets, make sure the cords are out of reach to prevent accidental strangulation.
When you need to clean your vertical window blinds, follow the cleaning instructions that come with the blinds. Cleaning your blind vanes is easy. If you have fabric vanes, vacuum them. For other vanes, use soap and water to clean them. Dry each vane with a cloth towel.
Vertical window blinds are great window treatment options. Whether you are purchasing blinds for the first time or upgrading the ones you currently have, vertical is the way to go. They add accent to any room in your house or business. With proper installation and ongoing care, your blinds will last a very long time.
